The protracted legal dispute over the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) senatorial ticket for Delta South has been fixed for definite hearing on July 6, as parties involved intensify efforts to resolve the contentious primary outcome.

A Federal High Court sitting in Asaba on Friday adjourned the matter to the new date following arguments from counsel representing the contending parties. The case, which borders on the validity of the primary election conducted in the district, has generated significant political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The legal battle pits a faction loyal to one aspirant against the party’s officially recognised candidate, with claims of irregularities, exclusion, and violation of electoral guidelines forming the core of the suit. Plaintiffs are seeking nullification of the primary results and a fresh poll, while the defence maintains that the process was transparent and in line with PDP constitution.

One of the lead counsel, Mr. Efe Akpofure (SAN), told journalists after proceedings that his client remains confident of a favourable outcome. “We are prepared to present compelling evidence that will expose the anomalies. The court has a duty to ensure justice and protect the sanctity of the electoral process,” he said.

The PDP leadership in Delta State has appealed for calm among supporters, urging them to await the court’s decision while focusing on party unity. A party chieftain, who preferred anonymity, described the litigation as “unfortunate but necessary to resolve once and for all.”

Political observers believe the outcome of the July 6 hearing could have far-reaching implications for the PDP’s prospects in Delta South, a strategic senatorial district known for its influence in state and national politics. The zone has produced prominent leaders and remains a key battleground in Delta’s power rotation dynamics.

As the case heads for definite hearing, stakeholders are watching closely to see whether the court will order a rerun or uphold the existing ticket. The judgment is expected to shape the political landscape in the oil-rich senatorial district as preparations for the next electoral cycle gather momentum.
