The Managing Director of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, Adedeji Ashiru, has warned that deforestation and indiscriminate waste disposal are contributing to flooding in communities.

Ashiru gave the warning on Monday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during a tree-planting exercise and awareness campaign to mark the 2026 World Rivers Day.

He said unpredictable rainfall and heavier downpours linked to climate change had increased the risk of flooding, making environmental protection a shared responsibility.

According to him, activities by residents, including dumping refuse into drainage channels, can affect waterways beyond their immediate neighbourhoods.

Ashiru explained that rainwater can carry waste from blocked drains into rivers, where the accumulation of refuse can obstruct the flow of water and increase the risk of flooding.

He urged residents to stop practices that damage forests and waterways and to adopt responsible waste disposal habits.

The O-ORBDA boss also encouraged communities to support tree planting and the protection of forests, rivers and drainage systems as part of efforts to reduce environmental risks.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, represented at the event, also called for a change in attitudes towards keeping waterways free of refuse.

Oresanya said planting trees along riverbanks could help strengthen embankments, reduce erosion and protect communities from flooding.

A guest lecturer at the event, Prof. Victoria Ojo, also warned that forest destruction and poor water management could affect river sustainability, water supply and public health.
