DEFENCE MINISTER CALLS FOR FIRM ACTION AGAINST NIGERIA’S SECURITY CHALLENGES
Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has urged the country’s security leadership to move beyond discussions and take decisive action in addressing evolving threats such as terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other criminal activities.
He made the remarks on Monday while inaugurating the 10th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Annual Conference 2025 in Lagos, describing the event as a platform to review the Nigerian Army’s operational readiness, professionalism, and alignment with national security priorities.
General Musa acknowledged that recent military operations have weakened terrorist and criminal networks in several regions but stressed that no single agency can secure the nation alone. “Intelligence sharing and inter-service cooperation are fundamental to effective national defence,” he said.
The Defence Minister called on security agencies to maintain unity, conduct joint operations, and collaborate with all relevant stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of translating strategic discussions into actionable plans with measurable outcomes.
While commending the Army’s accomplishments, General Musa honored fallen and injured soldiers, including Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja and Brigadier General Oba, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of both serving and retired personnel.
He also praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for his distinguished career from battalion and brigade commands in the North East to his current leadership role, urging senior commanders to continuously develop strategies to tackle emerging threats.
Reiterating that national security is a cornerstone of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, General Musa assured that the government will continue to provide policy support, strategic direction, and resources to maintain a professional and capable Armed Forces.
