DEFECTIONS TO APC A BETRAYAL OF THE PEOPLE — KWANKWASO
Rabiu Kwankwaso, National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and former Kano State governor, has denounced the recent wave of defections by opposition politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking at his Miller Road residence in Kano, Kwankwaso described the defections as the “worst political sin” and a profound betrayal of the people’s trust.
He made these remarks while receiving hundreds of supporters from Takai Local Government, who refused to follow Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila in his defection to the APC. Senator Kawu, who represents Kano South in the National Assembly, is among several NNPP lawmakers in Kano and Bauchi states who have recently switched allegiance.
Kwankwaso criticized the defectors for prioritizing personal gain over public service. He pointed out that voters in Kano South had rejected financial inducements like N200, spaghetti, and wrappers during the election, choosing instead to support the NNPP out of principle. He condemned those who won their positions under the NNPP platform only to abandon the party, labeling them as selfish and untrustworthy.
He advised young people to be wary of such politicians, warning that they are more interested in enriching themselves than serving the public good. Kwankwaso also praised the loyalty of NNPP supporters, assuring them that their commitment would be rewarded. He added that those who betrayed the Kwankwasiyya Movement would eventually regret their actions, emphasizing that fighting the movement would not be easy.
Echoing this sentiment, Kano State NNPP Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, applauded members for staying true to the party and promised they would be treated justly.
