DEFECTION: LABOUR PARTY BACKS PETER OBI’S MOVE TO ADC
The interim leadership of the Labour Party (LP), led by Nenadi Usman, has declared its full support for the defection of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
This was disclosed in a statement issued late Wednesday in Abuja by Usman’s Special Adviser on Media, Ken Asogwa.
According to the statement, Obi had the Labour Party’s approval to engage in coalition discussions from the outset. Usman explained that the party formally granted Obi its blessing on May 26, 2025, to participate in the ADC-led coalition.
She stressed that the Labour Party has not rescinded its earlier endorsement, despite Obi’s eventual formal entry into the ADC.
Usman noted that while the party’s leadership remains committed to reclaiming the Labour Party from entrenched interests allegedly seeking to impose a one-party system, members across the country should remain calm, as there is no cause for concern.
“We fully support Peter Obi as he joins the ADC. Following his anticipated exit, all statutory organs of the Labour Party will meet to chart a new and sustainable direction for the party,” she said.
She expressed confidence that the party would quickly rebound, adding that ongoing efforts were already underway to reposition it for future success.
“Even as we work diligently to address the gaps created by recent defections, we assure our members that the Labour Party will emerge stronger, better organised, and more focused,” Usman stated.
She also highlighted the party’s ongoing membership revalidation and registration exercise, describing it as a strategic move to reinvigorate the party and noting that early results from the exercise have been encouraging.
