DEADLY BAUCHI CLASH BETWEEN FARMERS AND HERDERS LEAVES ONE DEAD, DOZENS OF LIVESTOCK KILLED
A fresh wave of tension has gripped Bogoro Local Government Area in Bauchi State after a violent clash between farmers and herders claimed one life and left dozens of animals dead.
According to the Bauchi State Police Command, the conflict erupted on Friday in Kaduna village following the discovery of a farmer’s corpse. The deceased, identified as 40-year-old Irmiya Yohanna, was reported missing by the village head, Emmanuel Bulus, on August 7. A community search party later found his lifeless body on farmland.
Police spokesman Ahmed Wakil revealed that preliminary investigations suggested Yohanna may have been killed by unknown persons. This grim discovery sparked outrage among locals, who reportedly attacked nearby herders, killing about 20 cows and 19 sheep, and injuring several other animals.
Swift intervention by the police helped rescue 249 cows from the chaos. Authorities also arrested one suspect, Ahmadu Mairiga, in connection with the farmer’s death.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, visited the scene, meeting with traditional rulers, Fulani leaders, Sayawa elders, and community stakeholders to assess the situation. He urged residents to remain calm and allow the law to take its course, warning against any further acts of violence.
The incident underscores the fragile relations between farming and herding communities in the region, where disputes over land and resources have often led to deadly confrontations.
