DATTI BABA-AHMED FREE TO CONTEST FOR PRESIDENT – LABOUR PARTY SECRETARY

The Labour Party (LP) has clarified that its former vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, is fully eligible to contest for the presidency under the party’s platform.
Speaking in an interview with Trust TV, LP’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, stated that the party’s presidential ticket is not reserved for any individual, and all qualified members—including Datti—are welcome to vie for it.
“Datti is as qualified as Peter Obi to run for president,” Ibrahim declared. “The seat isn’t for any one person. It’s open to healthy competition. If he wants to run, he’s welcome to buy the nomination form, rally his supporters, and seek the party’s endorsement.”
However, Ibrahim voiced concerns over Peter Obi’s recent engagements with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under the emerging opposition coalition, suggesting that such moves could jeopardize his position in the Labour Party.
“You can’t be part of another political group and still expect to hold firm ground in the Labour Party. That’s not acceptable,” he warned. “If someone keeps associating with another party while trying to keep a foot in LP, they may end up disqualified from running under our banner.”
The statement reflects growing tensions within the party as it prepares for the 2027 general elections, and signals that competition for the presidential ticket may be wide open. Whether Peter Obi, Datti Baba-Ahmed, or a new face will eventually emerge as the LP flagbearer remains to be seen.
