DATA PROTECTION VITAL TO NATIONAL SECURITY — NDPC BOSS
The Director-General of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent O. O. Olatunji, has emphasised that robust data protection is essential for safeguarding national security in the digital age.
Speaking at a national security workshop, Olatunji highlighted the increasing risks posed by data breaches, cyber espionage, and misuse of personal information. “Protecting data is no longer just a privacy issue — it is a national security imperative,” he said. The NDPC boss called for stricter compliance by government agencies and private organisations with the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
He also urged the integration of data protection principles into national security strategies and the development of local expertise in cybersecurity and data governance.
The statement comes amid rising concerns over cyber threats and the need for stronger legal and institutional frameworks to protect sensitive information.
Stakeholders have welcomed the emphasis on data protection as a critical component of Nigeria’s overall security architecture.
