DANGOTE PLANS TO SELL 500MW OF EXCESS POWER IN KENYA
The Dangote Group plans to sell 500 megawatts of excess electricity to the Kenyan government from a proposed 1,000MW power plant to be built alongside its planned refinery in Lamu.
Group President, Aliko Dangote, disclosed this during a fireside chat at the Nairobi Securities Exchange, explaining that the refinery would require about 500MW of the plant’s capacity.
He said about 450MW would be used for refinery operations, while another 50MW would provide additional capacity for fluctuations.
The remaining 500MW would be supplied to the Kenyan government under an agreement, creating additional electricity capacity for industries operating in Lamu.
Dangote said the availability of excess power could encourage businesses to establish operations in the area without having to develop their own power-generation facilities.
The planned Lamu refinery is part of Dangote Group’s proposed investment in Kenya and is expected to have a capacity of 700,000 barrels per day.
Dangote also noted that the Lamu power plant would be twice the size of the 500MW facility currently powering the Dangote refinery in Lagos.
The group has previously announced plans to invest in power generation as part of efforts to address electricity supply challenges in Nigeria and other African markets.
