Dangote Group President Aliko Dangote has blamed local fuel marketers and international oil companies for protests over land earmarked for his proposed $16bn refinery project in Lamu, Kenya.

Dangote spoke during the groundbreaking ceremony for the refinery, which is planned to have a production capacity of 700,000 barrels per day. He said the project had faced opposition from groups he linked to interests in the existing fuel market.

He said the proposed refinery was intended to strengthen Kenya’s energy security and reduce its dependence on imported petroleum products.

The billionaire said the project would also create jobs and support economic activity in the region.

The refinery is planned for Lamu County, where residents have raised concerns over land ownership, compensation and the impact of the project on their communities.

Dangote said his company was prepared to engage with affected stakeholders and address legitimate concerns surrounding the development.

He described the investment as part of broader efforts to expand refining capacity in Africa and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.

The project is expected to serve Kenya and other markets in East Africa once completed.

Kenyan President William Ruto has backed the refinery project, describing it as an investment that could contribute to the country’s energy security and economic development.
