DAM OVERFLOW FLOODS EDO COMMUNITY
Heavy rainfall has caused the Ojirami Dam to overflow in Enwan Community, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, flooding homes and businesses and disrupting daily activities.
The flooding reportedly began after rainfall started around 6am, with water spreading through parts of the community and erosion damaging major roads. An oil mill was destroyed, while a poultry farmer also reported losing his birds to the flood.
Residents said the flooding affected movement in the area, preventing some students from attending school and limiting farmers’ access to their farms. Several shops were also unable to open for business.
A resident, Monday John, said the flood destroyed his poultry business and called on the authorities to address water management around the dam.
Another resident, John Omaze, said his house and palm oil mill were affected by the flood.
Residents also expressed concern about the possibility of further flooding if the situation is not addressed. One resident, identified as Ehis, urged the state government to take urgent measures to prevent a more serious disaster.
The residents called for better coordination with the relevant water authorities, particularly regarding the release of water from the dam.
