The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit Zone A, has handed over three truckloads of expired pharmaceutical products worth ₦3.7 billion to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The handover took place at the NCS headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos, during the visit of NAFDAC’s new Director of Enforcement and Investigation, Dr. Martin Iluyomade.

Speaking to journalists, Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu, head of FOU A, said the exercise was part of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NCS and NAFDAC. He explained that the MoU represents a milestone in Nigeria’s fight against fake and harmful products.

“What we are witnessing today is a follow-up of the MoU,” Shuaibu said. “Collaboration among regulatory and security agencies is key to stopping the smuggling of these dangerous consignments.”

The expired drugs, packed in sacks and cartons, included Hyergra, Royal Tablets 225, CSC Codeine Syrup, Really Extral, Tramadol, Amlodipine, Milk Oil Flavour, Firegra, among others.

Shuaibu warned that expired and counterfeit drugs pose serious risks to public health, stressing that Customs remains committed to keeping such products out of Nigerian markets.

Dr. Iluyomade commended Customs for its role in enforcing the MoU, describing the partnership as both “healthy and strategic.” He pledged that NAFDAC would intensify its crackdown on fake and expired drugs to safeguard the health of Nigerians.

With the growing threat of counterfeit pharmaceuticals, both agencies reaffirmed their resolve to work together in protecting public health and consumer safety across the country.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
