Licensed customs agents have urged the Federal Government to focus on developing an efficient deep seaport rather than expanding the number of ports without adequate infrastructure and cargo capacity.

The National President of the National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents, Lucky Amiwero, made the call in Lagos while speaking at an event marking his 73rd birthday.

Amiwero said the country’s port system required a comprehensive review involving maritime professionals and experts.

He called for a committee to assess the operations and infrastructure at the Lagos Port Complex, Tin Can Island Port, Lekki Deep Sea Port and Calabar Port.

According to him, inefficiencies in the port system were contributing to Nigeria losing transit and transshipment cargo to neighbouring countries, including Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic and Côte d’Ivoire.

He argued that Nigeria should develop a major deep seaport capable of serving as a transshipment and cargo hub for the country and the wider region.

Amiwero also raised concerns about rail connectivity at Lekki Deep Sea Port and its ability to accommodate the largest container vessels.

He urged the government to involve maritime professionals in decisions concerning the development and management of the nation’s ports.

He said improving port efficiency would strengthen Nigeria’s ability to compete for cargo within the West and Central African sub-region.
