The Cross River State Government has introduced a social reorientation campaign aimed at encouraging ethical conduct, civic responsibility and good citizenship among residents.

The initiative, tagged “Do the Right Thing,” was unveiled by the Special Adviser to Governor Bassey Otu on Public Affairs, Nsa Gill, during an advocacy visit to the state Commissioner for Environment, Bassey Mensah, in Calabar. 

Gill said the campaign, which has received the governor’s approval, would promote values including integrity, honesty, respect, accountability and community spirit. He stressed that the initiative was not a political campaign and would initially focus on sensitisation rather than punishment.

He said the campaign would encourage residents to act responsibly in public places, schools, offices, markets and on the roads. It will also promote proper waste disposal, clean drainage channels and compliance with environmental regulations.

Gill called for collaboration with relevant government agencies to take the campaign to residents through billboards, flyers, social media and other communication materials.

Mensah welcomed the initiative and said sustained public awareness could improve compliance with environmental regulations. He noted that indiscriminate waste disposal contributes to blocked waterways and flooding.

The commissioner also said residents who repeatedly violate environmental rules could face consequences after adequate sensitisation. 
