CROSS RIVER CALLS FOR RESEARCH TO FIGHT CHOLERA

The Cross River State Government has called for more research-driven interventions to strengthen efforts to prevent and control the spread of cholera across communities.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Ayuk, made the call while discussing the state’s response to cholera and the need to better understand how the disease spreads within communities.

Ayuk said greater attention should be given to secondary infections and transmission between communities, particularly in areas where people share water sources and other public facilities.

He stressed the importance of using research and reliable data to guide public health interventions rather than relying solely on emergency responses after outbreaks occur.

The commissioner also highlighted the need for stronger surveillance systems that can help health authorities identify cases early and respond before infections spread to other communities.

According to him, cooperation among health workers, researchers, local authorities and residents would be important in reducing the impact of cholera.

The state government is also expected to strengthen public awareness around hygiene, safe water and other preventive measures as part of its broader response.

The call comes amid continued concerns over cholera outbreaks in parts of Nigeria, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding, when contaminated water can increase the risk of transmission.

The Cross River Government said sustained research, community engagement and timely intervention would remain important in protecting residents and reducing the spread of the disease.
