C’RIVER RESIDENTS ACCUSE POLICE OF EXTORTION

Residents and motorists in Cross River State have accused some police officers of allegedly demanding money from road users, prompting concerns over extortion and harassment in parts of the state.

The allegations have generated public criticism, with residents calling for greater accountability from security personnel operating along major roads and checkpoints.

The development comes amid wider concerns about the conduct of some officers during enforcement activities in the state. Earlier reports also showed that police authorities had taken disciplinary action against officers accused of extorting motorists.

However, the Cross River State Police Command has denied directing its personnel to engage in extortion or collect money from motorists under the guise of enforcement.

The command said it remained opposed to extortion, abuse of office and other forms of unprofessional conduct by its personnel.

Police authorities stressed that officers are expected to carry out their duties professionally and in accordance with the law.

The command also maintained that its personnel have continued to work to protect residents, maintain public order and respond to security concerns across the state.

The allegations have renewed calls for stronger monitoring of police activities and better channels for residents to report misconduct.

The police said it would continue to uphold accountability and professionalism while urging members of the public to report any officer found engaging in unlawful conduct.
