The Cross River State Deputy Governor has expressed concern over rising boundary disputes affecting communities within and around the state, warning that the conflicts are becoming a threat to peace and development.

The Deputy Governor raised the issue during a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at addressing lingering land disagreements between neighbouring communities.

He noted that unresolved boundary tensions have continued to fuel clashes, displacement of residents, and destruction of property in affected areas.

According to him, the state government is committed to ensuring lasting peace through dialogue, proper demarcation processes, and collaboration with relevant national agencies.

Traditional rulers and community leaders were urged to take the lead in promoting peaceful coexistence and discouraging actions that could escalate tensions.

Security agencies have also been advised to maintain vigilance in conflict-prone areas to prevent violence while long-term solutions are being pursued.

Observers say boundary disputes remain one of the major causes of communal conflict in several parts of Nigeria, often driven by land ownership disagreements and unclear administrative demarcations.

Stakeholders at the meeting called for stronger intervention mechanisms, including mediation and government-backed verification of historical boundaries.

The Deputy Governor assured that the state will intensify efforts to resolve the disputes and prevent further breakdown of law and order.

The government emphasized that peace and stability remain essential for development and urged all parties to embrace dialogue over confrontation.
