COURT SUSPENDS RECOGNITION OF ONDO REGENT AMID LEGAL BATTLE

A High Court in Ondo State has suspended the recognition of the regent of a prominent traditional stool pending the determination of a suit challenging her appointment.

Justice A. O. Adegoke issued the interim order on Friday following an application by some members of the ruling house who alleged irregularities in the selection process. The regent’s recognition by the state government had been a subject of dispute among different factions of the royal family.

The court ordered all parties to maintain the status quo and adjourned the matter to a later date for hearing of the substantive suit. The ruling has temporarily halted any official functions or privileges associated with the regent’s position.

Counsel to the applicants, Mr. Femi Falana, described the order as a necessary step to prevent irreversible actions during the pendency of the case. “Our clients believe the selection process was flawed. We are confident that justice will prevail at the end of the day,” Falana stated.

The state government has yet to issue an official reaction to the court order. Sources close to the palace say the development has created tension within the community, with calls for calm and adherence to the rule of law.

The legal battle over the regency has been ongoing for several months, with different factions laying claim to the stool. The suspended recognition is expected to remain in place until the court delivers judgment on the main suit.

Traditional rulers and community leaders have appealed to all parties to respect the court’s decision and avoid actions that could lead to a breakdown of law and order in the area.
