COURT HALTS WORK ON DISPUTED LAGOS PROPERTY

The Lagos State High Court sitting in Igbosere has stopped further demolition, excavation and construction activities on a disputed property at 168 Broad Street, Lagos Island.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya issued the order following an application by Dr Abimbola Adebowale, who alleged that part of the property had been demolished before Taiwo Yusuf allegedly took possession and began preparations for new construction.

The dispute followed a 48-hour enforcement notice issued by the Lagos Island Local Government on August 6, directing occupants to vacate the premises and remove containers and other structures it described as illegal.

Adebowale also alleged that tenants were forcefully removed without notice and that part of the property was demolished at night before the premises were barricaded.

In an affidavit supporting the application, Babatunde Bello, a staff member of United Capital Trustee Limited, said the company had managed the property since 2016 without any dispute until the alleged encroachment.

The court’s order temporarily prevents further work on the property while the dispute is considered. The development means the parties involved must await further directions from the court before any demolition or construction can continue.

The case adds to ongoing disputes over property ownership, development and enforcement actions in Lagos Island.
