Tension in Alagbon as Court Stops Ondo Governor from Installing New Monarch

A brewing leadership crisis in Alagbon community, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, has taken a new twist as a High Court sitting in Okitipupa has stopped Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and state officials from installing or recognising a monarch in the community — for now.

Justice Temitope Adedipe issued an interim court order on Friday, asking all parties to maintain the current status quo until the court decides on a suit challenging the government’s recent move.

The controversy started after the Ondo State Executive Council (SEC), led by Governor Aiyedatiwa, confirmed Prince Olusola Joseph Ajaka as the pioneer Gbogunron of Idi-Ogba Alagbon. The announcement, made by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, claimed the appointment followed due process and the recommendation of recognised traditional authorities.

But community leaders in Alagbon disagreed. They raised objections and took the matter to court, accusing the government of rushing the process and allowing undue influence from a commissioner who is reportedly related to the Gbogunron family.

In the lawsuit HOK/76/2022, filed by D.J. Ayenowo of Sola Ebiseni and Associates, prominent community figures — High Chief Isaiah Adewole Demehin (a former Ondo State Commissioner for Information and the Asogbon of Ugboland) and Chief Mallon Ogede, the Baale of Alagbon — are challenging the legality of the installation.

They also claim that the move could disrupt peace in the oil-rich Ugbo Kingdom.

As the legal battle continues, the court has also ordered the Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Enitiolorunda Obateru Akinruntan, not to take any further steps regarding the monarch's installation.

The matter has been adjourned for the hearing of the interlocutory injunction and the eventual ruling on the main case. Until then, no crown will be worn in Alagbon.

This case highlights the deep-rooted tensions that can arise over traditional leadership roles — especially when politics, family ties, and community identity are involved.
