COCA-COLA SAYS RECYCLING INITIATIVES SUPPORT 13,000 NIGERIANS

Coca-Cola Nigeria has said its recycling initiatives have supported more than 13,000 Nigerians by creating income opportunities through the collection and aggregation of plastic waste.

The company disclosed this as it marked 75 years of operations in Nigeria, highlighting its investments in environmental sustainability, water access, youth development and healthcare.

According to the Coca-Cola System in Nigeria, which includes Coca-Cola Nigeria, Nigerian Bottling Company and The Coca-Cola Foundation, programmes such as the Empowering Collectors Initiative, Plastics Recycling Programme, CyclePlast, Tidy Nigeria and Green Campus have helped thousands of people earn livelihoods from plastic waste collection. 

The company also highlighted its Packaging Collection Hub in Apapa, Lagos, which has the capacity to process up to 13,000 metric tonnes of PET bottles annually. The facility currently supports more than 1,000 informal waste collectors and 70 aggregators. 

Beyond recycling, Coca-Cola said its water projects had provided safer water access to more than 16,000 people, while its Youth Empowered programme had reached 70,000 young Nigerians.

The company added that its Safe Birth Initiative had benefited more than 43,000 mothers and newborns through improved healthcare facilities and training.

Coca-Cola said the initiatives reflect its broader efforts to contribute to Nigeria’s economic and social development.
