Chelsea have entered a new era after American investment firm Clearlake Capital agreed to acquire the ownership interests of Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, giving the group full control of the Premier League club. The development brings an end to the ownership arrangement that began in 2022 following Roman Abramovich’s departure from the club.

Boehly, who has served as Chelsea chairman since the takeover, will leave his position as part of the transition. Walter will also sell his stake to Clearlake, while Swiss businessman Hansjörg Wyss will remain a stakeholder and partner within the ownership group.

Clearlake has been Chelsea’s majority owner since the 2022 takeover and will now become the club’s sole controlling owner. The transaction is reportedly valued at about £950 million and represents the latest major change in the club’s ownership structure since the consortium acquired Chelsea for £4.25 billion four years ago.

Chelsea said the ownership transition will not result in changes to the club’s day-to-day operations, leadership or strategic direction. Clearlake also stated that it intends to continue investing in the club’s infrastructure, sporting operations and player development as it takes full control.

Boehly said it had been an honour to serve as Chelsea chairman and expressed confidence in the club’s future under Clearlake’s leadership. The American businessman had been a prominent figure in Chelsea’s ownership since 2022, overseeing a period of significant investment in the men’s and women’s teams, academy and club infrastructure.
