CIVIL DEFENCE OFFICER FATALLY STABBED WHILE RESTRAINING MENTALLY UNSTABLE SUSPECT
An operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was fatally stabbed on Thursday by a middle-aged man suspected to be mentally unstable in Ondo State.
The incident took place in Oke-Ala community, Oba-Ile, Akure North Local Government Area, when two NSCDC officers responded to a complaint about public disturbance involving the suspect.
Sources revealed that the suspect’s mother had alerted authorities about her son’s erratic and disruptive behavior, which had persisted for years.
According to eyewitnesses, the situation escalated when the officers tried to prevent the suspect from causing further disruption. During the struggle, the man allegedly overpowered one of the officers and stabbed him multiple times.
“The man had been behaving unusually and suddenly became violent, disturbing the entire area. While struggling with the officer, he took a knife and stabbed him repeatedly,” a source said.
Despite being armed, the officers could not prevent the attack. The injured officer was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to his wounds.
Confirming the incident, NSCDC Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Daniel Aidamenbor, stated that the officers were attempting to take the man to a psychiatric facility for proper treatment when the attack occurred.
He emphasized that the officers were acting to ensure the safety of both the suspect and the community.
