The Chancellor of Dominion University, Ibadan, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun, has said the church’s investment in education is aimed at supporting government efforts and raising a new generation of responsible Nigerian leaders.

Adelakun explained that faith-based institutions have an important role to play in national development by providing quality education and helping young people develop the knowledge, values and skills needed to contribute positively to society.

He made the statement while addressing journalists at the university in Ibadan, Oyo State, ahead of activities marking the institution’s fourth convocation ceremony.

According to the chancellor, the church’s investment in education goes beyond providing classrooms and academic qualifications. It also focuses on raising individuals who can combine academic excellence with strong moral values and a sense of responsibility.

He said the goal was to produce graduates who could stand firmly by their principles, take up leadership positions and contribute to solving the challenges facing Nigeria.

Adelakun noted that educating young people is one way religious institutions can support the government in developing the country’s human resources. He stressed the importance of preparing students not only for employment but also for leadership and meaningful contributions to their communities.

The chancellor also assured parents of the university’s commitment to providing a safe learning environment, explaining that security measures had been strengthened around the institution over the past three years.

Meanwhile, the university’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jonah Akoun, highlighted the achievements of graduating students, including Nadia Rita Bayakly, who earned a First-Class degree in Mass Communication with a perfect cumulative grade point average of 5.0.

Akoun emphasised that university education should equip graduates with the knowledge and ability to drive positive change in society.

The university’s position highlights the role private and faith-based institutions can play in expanding educational opportunities, developing future leaders and supporting Nigeria’s wider development goals.
