CHRISTIANS RISK BAD GOVERNANCE BY SHUNNING POLITICS – C&S CLERIC

The spiritual leader of the Cherubim and Seraphim, Ona Iwa Mimo Oke Ayo, Marian Talabi, has urged Christians to participate actively in politics, warning that staying away from governance could contribute to poor leadership in Nigeria.

Talabi made the call at a press briefing in Lagos to commemorate the church’s 50th anniversary.

She said Christians should not leave the country’s political leadership entirely to people whose values may differ from theirs, stressing the importance of having credible believers involved in governance at the grassroots, state and federal levels.

The cleric argued that Christians who deliberately avoid politics may have limited grounds to complain when government policies affect their lives and communities.

She also encouraged Nigerian youths to take up leadership responsibilities, saying young people should not be viewed only as future leaders but should be given opportunities to contribute to governance now.

Talabi said the late founder of the church, Maria Ogunyooye, believed strongly in preparing younger generations for leadership and maintaining a clear succession plan.

She urged Christians and other Nigerians to approach political participation with integrity and a commitment to public service rather than personal financial interests.

The call comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections intensify, with religious, civil society and political groups increasingly encouraging citizens to take a more active role in the electoral process.

Speaking on the church’s history, its chairman, Segun Adelaja, said the ministry was founded by Ogunyooye in 1976 and had continued to grow over the past five decades.

The church also disclosed plans to complete projects initiated by its founder, including a clinic and a proposed auditorium. Officials said about ₦40m was still required to equip the clinic, while the proposed auditorium is estimated to cost about ₦5bn.

The anniversary programme includes lectures, a gala and awards night, a medal rally and other activities celebrating the church’s history and projecting its vision for the next phase.
