CHRISTIANS ARE MY BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY – SPYRO OPENS UP
Nigerian singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, has revealed that his greatest challenge in the music industry has come from Christians, not non-believers.
The 35-year-old artiste, who began his musical journey in the church choir, made the disclosure during an interview with Frank Edoho.
Spyro, who rose to fame in 2022 with his hit single “Billing”, said he was surprised by the criticism he received from fellow Christians after he became popular.
“The biggest problem I have ever had in this industry so far is the Christians, not even the Muslims,” Spyro said.
He explained that he expected support from Christians, believing they were all part of the same spiritual family, but instead, he faced judgment over his appearance and lifestyle choices.
“I was shocked when I came into the industry because in my own head, I’m like, we are family. So when they started giving me, ‘you wear earrings,’ and this and that, I was surprised,” he said.
The Who’s Your Guy crooner defended his approach to music, saying that faith-based artists should engage with the world rather than remain confined within church walls.
“How do we reach the people outside if we are not with them? The Bible says, ‘Go ye into the world.’ It didn’t say stay in the church,” Spyro noted.
He further alleged that some media outlets had misrepresented his words, twisting his statements to paint him negatively.
“So many of my words were twisted to make me look like the devil. I went for interviews where my sentences were chopped, paraphrased out of context. I’ve noticed that people don’t have issues with every other thing, but once you mention Jesus, there’s always a problem,” he added.
