CHINA BACKS TINUBU’S REFORMS, SEEKS CONTINUITY BEYOND 2027
China has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms and called for continuity in Nigeria’s policies beyond the 2027 general elections, highlighting the importance of stable relations and long-term cooperation between both countries.
The position comes as Nigeria continues to implement economic changes aimed at addressing longstanding challenges, attracting investment and improving the country's economic prospects. The reforms have generated considerable debate at home, particularly over their effects on living costs, businesses and household incomes.
China’s support signals an interest in maintaining a stable relationship with Nigeria as both countries pursue opportunities in trade, infrastructure development and investment. Nigeria remains an important economic partner in Africa, while China is a major player in global manufacturing, infrastructure financing and international commerce.
Policy continuity is often important to investors because major projects require long-term planning, substantial funding and predictable regulations. Changes in government priorities can affect investment decisions, particularly in sectors such as transportation, energy, manufacturing and telecommunications.
For Nigeria, maintaining international investor confidence will depend not only on policy consistency but also on the results of economic reforms. Businesses and households will be looking for improvements in employment, purchasing power, infrastructure and access to affordable financing.
The call for continuity beyond 2027 also comes as political attention gradually shifts towards the next general elections. However, decisions about Nigeria’s future leadership and economic direction ultimately rest with Nigerians and their democratic institutions.
While international support can strengthen diplomatic and economic cooperation, the effectiveness of the reforms will be judged by their impact on ordinary citizens and the wider economy.
As Nigeria and China continue their engagement, the key challenge will be translating diplomatic support into practical benefits, including stronger trade, productive investment and economic opportunities for Nigerians.
