CHELSEA COMPLETE £7.5M SIGNING OF WORLD CUP WINNER EMILIANO MARTíNEZ

Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa in a move that strengthens the club’s goalkeeping options ahead of the new Premier League season.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper joins the Blues for a reported fee of £7.5 million and has signed a three-year contract at Stamford Bridge. His arrival comes after Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso identified the goalkeeping position as an area requiring greater experience and consistency.

Martínez arrives at Chelsea with an impressive collection of honours, having played a key role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph and their Copa América victories in 2021 and 2024.

The goalkeeper has also won the prestigious Yashin Trophy twice, being recognised as the world's best goalkeeper in 2023 and 2024.

His move to Chelsea follows a six-year spell at Aston Villa, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most prominent goalkeepers after joining from Arsenal in 2020.

Martínez was an important figure in Villa’s rise under Unai Emery and helped the club secure European success, including their Europa League triumph last season. He leaves Villa after making more than 200 appearances for the club.

The transfer became possible after Aston Villa signed Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma for around £30 million, effectively opening the door for Martínez to seek a new challenge.

The Argentine had also been linked with Juventus earlier in the summer, but that proposed move collapsed before Chelsea stepped up their interest.

Chelsea's decision to bring in Martínez was accelerated following concerns over Robert Sánchez's performances. The Spanish goalkeeper has faced criticism for a number of costly mistakes, increasing the pressure on the club to strengthen the position.

Martínez is therefore expected to compete strongly for the starting role, with his experience potentially giving him an advantage as Chelsea seek greater stability between the posts. Reports indicate that he is expected to become the club's regular No. 1.

Speaking after completing the move, Martínez said joining Chelsea was an easy decision for him and his family. He also expressed his desire to win trophies and bring his competitive mentality to the club.

The signing represents another major move by Chelsea under Alonso as the manager looks to build a squad capable of challenging for major honours.

For Martínez, the transfer provides an opportunity to continue his career at one of England's biggest clubs while taking on a new challenge after six successful years at Villa Park.

Chelsea will now hope that the experienced Argentine can bring leadership, confidence and consistency to a goalkeeping department that has been under scrutiny in recent seasons.
