Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed pride in Nigeria’s players following their dramatic 4-1 victory over Gabon in the semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoffs.

The match, held on Thursday, saw Sevilla striker Akor Adams give Nigeria the lead with just 12 minutes remaining. Gabon fought back in the 88th minute through Mario Lemina, forcing the game into extra time.

In extra time, substitute Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s advantage in the 97th minute, before Victor Osimhen scored twice to seal a commanding 4-1 victory for the Super Eagles.

Speaking after the match, Chelle praised his squad for their focus, teamwork, and determination.

“I am very proud of these guys because every time they are focused on what I asked, what I want, and it shows in their performance,” Chelle said. “The word today was passion — working together to achieve the same goal.”

The win sends Nigeria into the WCQ playoff final against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, keeping their hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive.

Chelle’s words underline the importance of teamwork and perseverance, highlighting how the Super Eagles overcame a late scare to secure a memorable victory.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
