CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: ALONSO EXPLAINS WHY VINICIUS STARTED ON THE BENCH AGAINST MARSEILLE
Real Madrid manager, Xabi Alonso, has revealed why he decided to bench star forward Vinicius Junior in their 2-1 Champions League win over Marseille on Tuesday night.
Alonso surprised many fans by starting Rodrygo ahead of Vinicius in the clash against the French side. Vinicius was later brought on in the second half to replace his fellow Brazilian teammate.
Despite the change, it was Kylian Mbappe who stole the spotlight, scoring twice from the penalty spot to secure victory for Los Blancos.
Speaking after the match, Alonso explained his decision, stressing the importance of rotation at this stage of the season.
“We’re at a demanding point in the calendar and we need everyone,” Alonso said.
“Everyone will get their moment, and the important thing is that everyone feels prepared and important, because they are, and they will be throughout the season.”
With Real Madrid chasing both domestic and European glory, Alonso’s approach highlights the depth of the squad and the need to keep all players fresh and ready for the challenges ahead.
