CARRICK REVEALS WHY RASHFORD WAS TAKEN OFF AGAINST EVERTON

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has explained that Marcus Rashford was substituted during the club’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Everton because the forward felt a physical issue. Rashford, who started his second consecutive league game, was withdrawn in the 70th minute and replaced by Patrick Dorgu, a decision that surprised many supporters because the England international had been one of United’s most threatening players at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Carrick later confirmed that the change was precautionary after Rashford reported feeling something during the match.

The United boss was nevertheless pleased with Rashford’s overall contribution before his departure, describing the winger as sharp and dangerous throughout the contest. Rashford repeatedly caused problems from the left flank and combined effectively with Luke Shaw, with Carrick highlighting the understanding between the two players. The manager said Rashford had created good opportunities and remained a major threat, although the final touch needed to turn his involvement into a goal or assist did not quite materialise.

Rashford’s withdrawal came with United leading 1-0 after Bryan Mbeumo had put the visitors ahead early in the second half. Everton eventually levelled through Tyrique George before Benjamin Sesko restored United’s advantage with an 88th-minute header. However, United were denied victory in dramatic fashion when Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a spectacular long-range equaliser deep into stoppage time, leaving Carrick frustrated after his side had twice been in front.

Carrick admitted that the result was particularly painful because United had done enough at different stages to put themselves in a position to claim all three points. He said the team needed to manage the closing stages better after conceding the late equaliser, although he also praised the attacking play and the connections his players showed during the match. United ultimately had to settle for a point, leaving them with four points from their opening three league matches of the season.

Rashford’s fitness will now be monitored ahead of United’s Champions League campaign, with the club scheduled to face Azerbaijan side Sabah next. The forward has made an encouraging return to the United starting XI after his recent loan spells away from Old Trafford, making his availability an important issue for Carrick as the season begins to gather pace. United will also face Manchester City in their next Premier League fixture, adding further importance to Rashford’s recovery and the manager’s selection decisions.
