CARRAGHER, NEVILLE QUESTION CHELSEA’S TITLE HOPES AFTER SANCHEZ ERRORS

Chelsea’s impressive 3-2 victory over Fulham in their Premier League opener has been overshadowed by concerns over goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, with former England defenders Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville questioning whether the Blues can mount a serious title challenge with the Spaniard in goal.

Sánchez came under scrutiny after his mistakes contributed to both of Fulham’s goals at Craven Cottage. Chelsea eventually secured all three points in Xabi Alonso’s first Premier League match as manager, but the goalkeeper’s display raised fresh questions about his reliability between the posts.

Carragher was particularly critical of Sánchez, arguing that Chelsea’s title ambitions could be compromised if the goalkeeper remains their first choice. The former Liverpool defender described the situation as a major weakness that the London club would need to address if they want to compete with the Premier League’s strongest sides.

Neville also highlighted the need for Chelsea to consider strengthening in goal. The former Manchester United defender mentioned Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez as the type of experienced goalkeeper Chelsea could consider bringing in to provide greater security behind their defence.

Despite the criticism, Chelsea’s attacking display provided plenty of encouragement. João Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer all found the net as Alonso’s side produced an entertaining attacking performance and claimed victory in the opening game of the campaign.

However, the defensive concerns remain a significant talking point following the five-goal thriller. Chelsea were forced to withstand late pressure from Fulham after Gonzalo García pulled another goal back, with the result exposing the contrast between the Blues’ attacking strength and their vulnerability at the back.

With the transfer window still open, attention will now turn to whether Chelsea respond to the concerns by strengthening their goalkeeping department. For Alonso, the challenge will be to maintain the attacking momentum shown at Fulham while eliminating the costly mistakes that could prove more damaging against stronger opponents.
