The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid glowing tribute to the late Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, describing him as a powerful symbol of courage, compassion and shared humanity for his heroic role in saving 262 Christians during a violent attack in Plateau State in 2018.

In a statement issued on Saturday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the late Islamic cleric’s actions stood as a rare example of moral bravery and selflessness, noting that his intervention at a time of extreme danger would remain etched in Nigeria’s history.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the death of Imam Abubakar, who passed away at the age of 92. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also mourned the late cleric, describing him as a true hero of humanity whose actions transcended religious and ethnic divides.

In its tribute, CAN said the Imam’s courageous decision to shield innocent people at great personal risk demonstrated the true essence of faith and humanity.

“The Christian Association of Nigeria pays glowing tribute to an extraordinary religious leader whose life and actions remain a profound testimony to courage, compassion, and our shared humanity,” the statement read.

“The late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi will forever be remembered for his rare moral bravery and selflessness at a time of grave danger. By choosing to protect innocent lives at great personal risk, he saved 262 Christians during a violent massacre in 2018, standing firmly on the side of humanity when it mattered most. His actions transcended religious boundaries and powerfully affirmed that the sanctity of human life is sacred above all else.”

CAN further praised the late cleric’s conduct, stressing that his intervention went beyond saving lives, as it also strengthened interfaith harmony and renewed hope in a country often troubled by religious and ethnic tensions.

“This singular act of heroism did more than save lives. It reinforced hope, strengthened interfaith harmony, and reminded our nation that peace is possible when conscience, love, and faith guide our actions,” the association said.

“In a world often divided by suspicion and hatred, the Imam stood as a bridge-builder and a living symbol of what true religion represents.”

The association recalled that in recognition of his exceptional service to humanity and his outstanding contribution to peaceful coexistence, Imam Abdullahi Abubakar was honoured during CAN’s Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in 2021.

“While plaques may fade with time, his legacy will endure as a shining example for religious leaders, communities, and generations to come,” Archbishop Okoh said.

CAN added that the courage displayed by the late Imam deserves not only remembrance but continuous amplification, stressing the importance of keeping his story alive as a lesson in unity and moral responsibility.

The association called for sustained public recognition of his sacrifice, including meaningful engagement with his family, to ensure that his legacy continues to inspire mutual respect, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence across Nigeria.

“As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life well lived in service to God and humanity,” the statement concluded.

CAN also extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Imam, his community in Plateau State, and all Nigerians who were inspired by his remarkable example of selflessness and bravery.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
