CALLS FOR TINUBU’S THIRD TERM MAY EMERGE AMONG NIGERIANS — OLUWO
The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has suggested that many Nigerians may eventually push for a change to the constitution to allow Bola Tinubu to remain in office beyond the two‑term limit outlined in Nigeria’s Constitution.
In a congratulatory message marking Tinubu’s 74th birthday on Sunday, conveyed through his spokesperson Ibrahim Alli, the traditional ruler described the president as a decisive leader whose policies have laid a foundation for renewed hope and national development.
Oba Akanbi said that because of what he viewed as Tinubu’s impactful leadership and reform efforts, there is the possibility that Nigerians could call for a constitutional review to permit tenure extension beyond the current two‑term limit. “He is a leader who knows what he is doing,” the monarch was quoted as saying.
The comments have sparked renewed debate across the country about term limits and democratic norms, fueling discussions on both social and traditional media. Supporters of the president point to reforms they say have strengthened economic indicators and governance, while critics warn that changing constitutional limits could undermine democratic principles.
Under Nigeria’s current constitutional framework, presidents are limited to two four‑year terms. Any move to change this would require a constitutional amendment — a process that involves approval by a two‑thirds majority of the National Assembly and ratification by a majority of state Houses of Assembly.
Analysts say the debate comes as political conversations begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections and beyond, with the question of leadership continuity becoming a prominent talking point among both political elites and grassroots stakeholders.
