CAF 2025 PLAYER OF THE YEAR: IKPEBA EXPLAINS WHY HAKIMI EDGED OSIMHEN
The race for the 2025 CAF African Player of the Year sparked heated debate among fans, but former Super Eagles star Victor Ikpeba believes the winner, Achraf Hakimi, fully deserved the crown over Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen.
Hakimi, who plays as a right-back for Paris Saint-Germain, had an exceptional season, winning almost every major trophy available to his club. His achievements included the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1 title, and a domestic clean sweep—missing only the FIFA Club World Cup. According to Ikpeba, this level of success made the Moroccan defender stand out from the competition.
Osimhen, on the other hand, also had a remarkable year, scoring 37 goals and providing eight assists in 41 matches for Galatasaray. His efforts played a crucial role in helping the Turkish giants secure a domestic double. Despite his impressive numbers, Ikpeba says Hakimi’s team achievements with PSG placed him slightly ahead.
“We are disappointed that Nigeria isn’t going to the World Cup, but Victor has been outstanding with his passion and determination. He always gives everything,” Ikpeba said.
However, when comparing the top three contenders—Hakimi, Osimhen, and Mohamed Salah—Ikpeba maintained that the Moroccan was the rightful winner.
“Hakimi has been brilliant. He won the Ligue 1, the Champions League—he practically won everything with PSG. For the beauty of the game, he is a deserving winner.”
Hakimi’s win marks another major milestone in his career, while Osimhen remains one of Africa’s brightest football stars, with fans confident that his time at the top will come again.
