BUNDIBUGYO EBOLA: EARLY DETECTION, ISOLATION KEY TO CONTAINING NIGERIA’S OUTBREAK – EXPERT
Finding suspected Ebola cases quickly and providing care in properly equipped isolation facilities are crucial to preventing further infections in Nigeria.
The warning follows the confirmation of an imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease in Abuja. The World Health Organization has clarified that a single imported case does not, on its own, establish that widespread transmission is occurring in the country.
Early detection matters because the first symptoms—including fever, weakness, headache and muscle pain—can resemble other illnesses. Laboratory testing is needed to confirm infection.
Prompt isolation allows patients to receive care while reducing the risk of exposing relatives, other patients and healthcare workers.
Contact tracing is equally important. Health teams identify people who may have been exposed and monitor them for symptoms, helping detect any additional infections early.
Bundibugyo virus spreads through direct contact with infected blood or other body fluids, or contaminated materials. Proper protective equipment and infection-control procedures are therefore essential in healthcare settings.
Although there is no specifically approved treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease, early supportive care can improve survival. This includes replacing lost fluids, correcting electrolyte imbalances and treating complications.
Public cooperation also matters. Anyone who develops symptoms after a possible exposure should promptly contact health authorities and explain their exposure history so that safe assessment can be arranged.
