BUCCI FRANKLIN OPENS UP ON HIS PAINFUL PATH TO DRUG ABUSE
Nigerian actor Bucci Franklin has shared a deeply personal story about how his father’s abandonment as a child pushed him into drug abuse and a troubled lifestyle.
In a candid interview with With Chude, the Nollywood star revealed that growing up without his father deeply affected him. His mother, Joy, raised him alone after his dad left. Franklin said the absence created a void that led him to make poor choices, including hard drugs and womanising.
“I used to think there was peace in death I could not find in life,” he reflected, describing dark moments when he struggled with addiction.
Bucci Franklin, whose real name is Onyebuchi Franklin Odurukwe, was born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on June 9, 1986. He is originally from Nkwerre in Imo State. He credited his late mother for his resilience and success, especially after she passed away shortly before he won Best Supporting Actor at the 2026 AMVCAs for his role in To Kill a Monkey.
The actor said his difficult childhood made him understand the challenges of single parenting. While he praised his mother’s strength, he also noted that boys especially need positive father figures in their lives.
His openness has sparked conversations online about fatherhood, mental health, and the impact of broken homes on young people. Many fans and fellow actors have praised him for speaking honestly, saying his story will help others facing similar struggles.
Bucci Franklin has since turned his life around. He is now known not just for his acting but also for using his platform to inspire young people. He continues to feature in movies and remains one of the respected voices in Nollywood.
