Professionals in the broadcasting industry have called for the responsible and ethical deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools while strengthening mentorship programmes for upcoming journalists.

The charge was made on Wednesday during a high-level summit organised by the Broadcast Journalists Association of Nigeria (BJAN) in Lagos.

Participants acknowledged AI’s potential to enhance news production, editing, and audience engagement, but warned against over-reliance that could erode journalistic values such as accuracy, fairness, and originality.

They urged media houses to develop clear ethical guidelines for AI usage to prevent misinformation and deepfake threats.

The professionals also emphasised the need for experienced broadcasters to actively mentor young talents to preserve industry standards amid rapid technological changes.

BJAN President, Mrs. Funmilayo Adekoya, described mentorship as critical to building a credible and professional broadcast sector capable of meeting 21st-century demands.

The summit ended with a resolution to establish a national mentorship network and regular capacity-building workshops on digital ethics
