The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has constituted a seven-man panel of medical experts to intervene in the ongoing dispute between the Department of State Services (DSS) medical team and private consultants engaged by detained Biafra agitator, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Lead counsel to the DSS, Asiwaju Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, disclosed this at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday while opposing Kanu’s application for transfer to the National Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Awomolo explained that the NMA team, made up of eminent medical practitioners across Nigeria, had already visited Kanu in DSS custody to independently ascertain his health status.

While the DSS medical team, led by Dr. Mohammed Nasir, insists Kanu can be properly managed at their facilities, his private consultants, led by Professor Martin Aghaji, maintain that his condition requires treatment at the National Hospital due to deterioration.

The DSS, however, accused Professor Aghaji of exaggerating Kanu’s medical report, noting that it suspiciously recommended foreign hospitals in the U.S. for further treatment.

Kanu’s lead counsel, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, told the court his team would not oppose the NMA’s intervention if it is formally ordered by the court. He stressed that Kanu’s deteriorating health must be prioritized to ensure he is fit to stand trial.

The DSS lawyer countered, arguing that transferring Kanu to the National Hospital would disrupt operations and compromise security, insisting instead that he could enjoy the services of doctors of his choice within DSS facilities.

After hearing submissions from both sides, Justice James Omotosho adjourned ruling on the application, promising to deliver a decision later today.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
