BREAKING: NIGERIAN NURSES CALL OFF NATIONWIDE STRIKE AFTER GOVERNMENT AGREEMENT
Nigerian Nurses Suspend Nationwide Strike After Reaching Agreement with Government
The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has officially suspended its nationwide strike, which began on July 29, 2025.
This development was confirmed by the Minister of Health, Professor Ali Pate, after a closed-door meeting held in Abuja on Friday. According to him, the decision came after fruitful discussions and agreements were reached with the union’s leadership.
While the union leaders chose not to speak publicly after the meeting, sources say the resolution addressed key concerns raised by the nurses, leading to the suspension of the ongoing strike in public health institutions.
The nurses had embarked on the industrial action in protest against what they described as the government's failure to act on a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14. Their demands included improved working conditions, fair remuneration, and better welfare policies across hospitals nationwide.
Originally planned to run until August 5, the warning strike had already started affecting services in public hospitals across the country. However, with this new agreement, operations are expected to gradually return to normal.
The suspension of the strike brings relief to many Nigerians who depend on public healthcare services. As negotiations continue, there is renewed hope that lasting solutions will be implemented to address the challenges facing the country’s nurses and midwives.
