BRAZIL, US RESUME TRADE TALKS AS TRUMP TARIFFS TRIGGER FRESH NEGOTIATIONS

Brazil and the United States have resumed high-level discussions aimed at resolving a trade dispute sparked by tariffs imposed by the administration of US President Donald Trump on Brazilian imports.

The latest talks took place virtually on Monday, August 31, 2026, bringing together Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Minister of Development, Industry, Foreign Trade and Services Márcio Elias Rosa, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Both sides agreed to continue negotiations through additional meetings in the coming weeks.

The renewed dialogue follows a recent telephone conversation between Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Trump, during which the two leaders agreed to reopen discussions on the trade measures that have strained relations between the two countries.

Brazilian officials have been seeking the removal or reduction of the tariffs, arguing that the measures are unjustified and have negatively affected Brazilian exporters.

The United States imposed tariffs of up to 37.5 per cent on some Brazilian products, combining a 25 per cent tariff with an additional 12.5 per cent levy. Washington has cited concerns including trade practices, deforestation and alleged failures to address forced labour.

The tariffs have affected a wide range of Brazilian exports and created additional pressure on businesses trading between the two countries. Brazil has responded by exploring measures under its Economic Reciprocity Law, although its government has continued to prioritise negotiations.

During Monday's meeting, Brazilian officials presented proposals aimed at expanding exemptions and finding a longer-term solution to the dispute. Brazil has reportedly argued that several of the US justifications for the tariffs are unrelated to legitimate trade issues.

The resumption of negotiations is being viewed as a positive development after months of heightened tensions between Brasília and Washington.

US officials have also indicated an interest in reaching an agreement, with Trade Representative Greer expected to continue discussions with Brazilian counterparts as both governments work towards a possible settlement.

Technical teams from both countries are expected to hold further meetings before a planned face-to-face engagement between senior trade officials.

Brazilian authorities have maintained that any agreement must protect the country's economic interests while ensuring fair treatment for Brazilian exports in the US market.

The talks could also provide an opportunity for both countries to address broader commercial issues, including market access and the treatment of key Brazilian exports.

Despite the renewed diplomatic engagement, no final agreement has yet been reached, and significant differences remain over the tariffs and the conditions attached to their removal.

The two governments are expected to continue negotiations in the coming weeks as they seek to ease trade tensions and restore a more stable economic relationship between two of the largest economies in the Americas.
