BRAZIL LEGEND ZICO NAMES JAY-JAY OKOCHA AS AFRICA’S GREATEST FOOTBALLER OF ALL TIME
Brazilian football legend Zico has named former Super Eagles captain Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha as the greatest African player of all time.
The 71-year-old made the revelation while speaking on John Obi Mikel’s “Obi One Podcast” on Thursday.
Zico, widely regarded as one of football’s most skillful playmakers, praised Okocha’s exceptional flair and creativity, describing him as “a fantastic player.”
“I like Okocha — a fantastic player. Number 10, Okocha. Eto’o, fantastic. George Weah, Drogba,” Zico said.
The Brazilian icon explained that Okocha’s dazzling dribbles and artistic control of the ball made him stand out among his peers, adding that his unique playing style reminded him of the Brazilian philosophy of football — beautiful, joyful, and unpredictable.
During the interview, Zico also reaffirmed his belief that his compatriot Pelé remains the greatest footballer of all time, noting that no player has yet matched the late icon’s impact on the game.
Okocha, now 52, made 73 appearances for the Nigerian national team, scoring 14 goals, and remains one of the country’s most beloved football legends — celebrated for his dazzling footwork and entertaining style that lit up stadiums across Europe and Africa.
