BORNO STEPS UP FLOOD PREVENTION WITH DREDGING, DRAINAGE PROJECTS
The Borno State Government has intensified measures to reduce the impact of flooding through the dredging of waterways, construction of drainage systems and other flood-control projects across the state. The move is aimed at improving the flow of water and reducing the risk of flooding in communities that are vulnerable during the rainy season.
The state government said the intervention forms part of its broader efforts to strengthen infrastructure and protect residents and properties from the effects of heavy rainfall. Dredging activities are being carried out in identified waterways to remove silt and other obstructions that can restrict the movement of water during periods of intense rainfall.
Authorities are also working on drainage and culvert projects in areas where poor water channels have contributed to flooding. The projects are expected to improve the movement of stormwater and reduce the pressure on existing drainage networks when there is heavy rainfall.
The government said the measures are being implemented as part of a wider flood-management strategy, with relevant agencies monitoring areas considered vulnerable to flooding. Residents have also been urged to support the efforts by keeping drainage channels clear and avoiding activities that could obstruct waterways.
The intensified intervention comes as communities across the country continue to face the effects of seasonal flooding. The Borno Government said the ongoing projects would help strengthen the state's preparedness and reduce the disruption that flooding can cause to homes, roads, businesses and other public infrastructure.
