BISHOP URGES GOVERNMENT TO DEPLOY TECHNOLOGY IN FIGHT AGAINST INSECURITY

A prominent Nigerian cleric has called on the Federal Government to aggressively deploy modern technology as a key strategy in tackling the country’s persistent security challenges.

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, in a recent address, emphasised that traditional approaches alone are insufficient in addressing sophisticated threats such as banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency. He advocated for the integration of surveillance drones, advanced data analytics, artificial intelligence, and improved communication systems to enhance intelligence gathering and rapid response capabilities.

“Security is no longer just about manpower; it is about smart power. We must embrace technology to stay ahead of criminals who are increasingly using sophisticated methods,” the Bishop said during a public lecture on national development.

The cleric also stressed the need for better coordination between security agencies and the inclusion of local communities in technology-driven initiatives. He warned that without urgent technological upgrades, efforts to restore peace in affected regions would continue to yield limited results.

The call comes as the government faces mounting pressure to address insecurity, which has disrupted farming, education, and economic activities in several parts of the country. Stakeholders have welcomed the suggestion, urging relevant ministries to prioritise digital tools in security architecture.

Bishop Kukah further appealed to leaders to combine technological investment with good governance and justice to address root causes of unrest.
