The Catholic community in Nsukka and beyond is mourning the passing of Bishop Emeritus, Most Rev. Dr. Francis Emmanuel Ogbonna Okobo, who died early Friday morning at the age of 89.

The sad news was confirmed in a statement by Rev. Fr. Amuluche Greg Nnamani, Vicar General of the Diocese.

A Life of Service

Born on November 4, 1936, Bishop Okobo was ordained a Catholic priest on June 4, 1966. His deep commitment to faith and service led to his appointment as the first Bishop of Nsukka Diocese on November 19, 1990. He was consecrated shortly after, on January 6, 1991.

For over two decades, Bishop Okobo shepherded the diocese with dedication, leaving behind a strong foundation for its growth and spiritual development. He retired on April 13, 2013, after reaching the statutory retirement age of 80.

Since the announcement of his passing, tributes have been flooding social media. Many faithful remember him as a pioneer, teacher, and father figure, who played a vital role in building and nurturing the Nsukka Diocese into what it is today.

His death marks the end of an era, but his legacy of faith, service, and leadership will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
