In a strong show of unity, the governments of Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau States have pledged to work together to combat the growing insecurity caused by herdsmen attacks across the North Central region.

The commitment was made during a joint press conference held in Makurdi, Benue State’s capital, following the recent tragic massacre in Yelewata, which claimed over 200 lives.

Ben Akwash, Director-General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA), led a delegation to Benue to express solidarity and discuss actionable solutions. He emphasized that the shared history and close ties between the states made it necessary to stand together in times of crisis.

“We are here not just to commiserate with the people but to chart a way forward and prevent further bloodshed,” Akwash said. He also called on both Nasarawa and Benue State governments to boost security around Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, where many victims have sought refuge.

Echoing the same sentiments, Mr. Sunday Abdul, Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (PLASEMA), described the Yelewata killings as a tragedy that cuts across the entire region.

“This is not just Benue’s pain—it is North Central’s tragedy,” Abdul said. “What happened in Yelewata is also happening in Southern Kaduna, Taraba, and parts of Nasarawa. These attacks are cruel and must end.”

He urged the people of Benue to remain hopeful, assuring them that they are not alone in their suffering. “Let us have faith. God is still with us. And as a region, we must stand together in prayer and action.”

Dr. James Iorpuu, Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), welcomed the visiting officials and thanked them for their support. He described the Yelewata attack as “wicked” and revealed that about 107 victims are still undergoing treatment.

“The state has been under siege since 2011,” Iorpuu lamented. “Every day brings more sorrow, and yet our people remain resilient.”

The visit ended with a renewed commitment from all three states to collaborate more closely, especially through their emergency management agencies, to bring lasting peace to the region.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
