BENUE BOAT ACCIDENT DEATH TOLL RISES TO FOUR
The death toll from a boat accident on the Buruku River in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State has risen to four, while nine people remain missing.
The accident occurred on Saturday as passengers were travelling from a burial ceremony in the area.
The Benue State Emergency Management Agency said four bodies had been recovered, including that of Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Moses Tsuagh.
The agency said more than 200 people were believed to have been on the boat, including members of an Okada riders’ association and other passengers who joined the vessel at the waterside.
Emergency officials said rescue efforts were continuing at the scene as authorities searched for those still missing.
Following the incident, the state Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Dennis Iyaghigba, ordered the suspension of the Buruku crossing-point branch of the Nigeria Union of Maritime Workers.
He also directed the suspension of the line operator and ordered the arrest and detention of the boat skipper involved in the incident.
The state government is expected to review safety arrangements at the crossing point as rescue operations continue.
Authorities have continued efforts to account for passengers affected by the accident.
