Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has warned the newly sworn-in chairmen of the state’s 20 local government areas against misappropriating or diverting public funds.

The governor gave the warning on Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected council chairmen at the Government House in Bauchi.

Mohammed urged the new council leaders to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of local government resources, stressing that financial autonomy comes with greater responsibility to deliver good governance at the grassroots.

He said the chairmen should view their positions as an opportunity to serve residents rather than as a means of gaining personal benefits from public resources.

The governor urged them to focus on key areas including security, education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure in their respective local government areas.

He also called on the chairmen to work closely with traditional institutions, security agencies, women, youths, and other stakeholders to promote peace and development across the state.

Mohammed said the people now had greater expectations of local government officials because of their closeness and accessibility to communities.

He added that the new chairmen were selected based on their records, competence, and commitment, and urged them to justify the confidence placed in them.

The governor also encouraged the officials to complement the state government’s investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and rural roads.

He stressed that transparency and accountability would be essential to ensuring that the benefits of democracy reach communities across Bauchi State.
