The people of Bauchi State and the wider Nigerian political community are mourning the loss of Alhaji Ahmed Makama Hardawa, the Chairman of the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC), who passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, in Abuja after a brief illness.
The news of his passing was confirmed on Wednesday through an official statement issued by Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Bala Mohammed.
Describing the late chairman as a respected statesman and an accomplished public servant, the statement highlighted Hardawa's long-standing contributions to Nigeria’s electoral system. He had previously served as Resident Electoral Commissioner in both Taraba and Nasarawa States, earning a reputation for integrity, fairness, and dedication to democratic principles.
Governor Bala Mohammed praised him as a man of “wisdom, humility, and exemplary leadership,” noting that his work significantly contributed to strengthening democratic governance, particularly at the grassroots level in Bauchi State.
“He was a patriotic Nigerian who dedicated his life to ensuring free and fair elections. His leadership at BASIEC was marked by transparency and fairness,” the governor said.
According to the statement, funeral prayers (Janazah) for Alhaji Hardawa will be held today, Wednesday, July 30, at the Emir’s Palace in Bauchi by 5:00 p.m.
His death marks a significant loss for Bauchi and the nation, especially at a time when Nigeria continues to strive for stronger, more credible electoral institutions.
