Incumbent Senate President secures "no vacancy" declaration from serving lawmakers while Imo Governor positions himself for return to National Assembly amid All Progressives Congress geopolitical calculations

A major leadership contest has emerged within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the control of the 11th National Assembly, with incumbent Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma positioning their respective camps ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The political maneuvering intensified following public declarations on the floor of the Senate, where serving lawmakers led by Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno and Senator Cyril Fasuyi formally endorsed Akpabio for a second consecutive term as Senate President. During plenary, lawmakers declared that there was "no vacancy" in the Senate leadership for the upcoming legislative session, passing a voice vote in support of Akpabio and Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau.

However, political strategists note that the succession battle remains fluid as Governor Uzodimma completes his second gubernatorial term in Imo State. Uzodimma, a former two-term senator, is widely reported to be building a coalition among South-East APC leaders and presidential allies to secure the Senate Presidency in 2027, leveraging regional calls for the South-East zone to produce high-ranking principal officers.

The rivalry previously triggered legislative debates surrounding proposed amendments to the Senate Standing Orders. The controversial rule changes sought to restrict eligibility for top leadership posts to multi-term lawmakers who served in the immediately preceding assembly, a move interpreted by critics as an attempt to block returning former senators like Uzodimma before the Senate ultimately rescinded the proposal.

While serving senators have signaled early support for Akpabio, political analysts emphasize that under Nigeria's constitutional framework, the election of presiding officers remains the exclusive prerogative of lawmakers elected during the 2027 general elections. As the APC balances competing geopolitical interests across the South-South and South-East regions, the final outcome will depend heavily on party zoning decisions and executive backing ahead of the June 2027 inauguration.
